How to Make Perfect Sushi Rice - The Video

Over the coming months I'll be adding how to make sushi videos to this site. Making these things is a lot harder than rolling sushi, so give me a bit of time.

For now check out my first video on how to make sushi rice. You've got to master this before you try anything else!

How I Learned to Make Sushi at Home

I’m just an ordinary suburban guy living with a terrible secret. I’m addicted to sushi.

There was a time when I thought that making sushi was a mysterious art form best left in the hands of my favorite sushi chef, Mitsunori Ichino.

I was content to talk sushi, eat sushi and grab every opportunity to exclaim, “Let’s go for sushi!” Friends and family, rather sarcastically began calling me the “Sushi Guy”.

A few years ago, I faced a crisis. Chef Mitsnori Ichino’s dazzling sushi recipes were burning a hole in my wallet. I had two choices. I could resort to a life of eating cheap supermarket sushi (ugh!) or learn how to make my own.

My friend Andre, a sushi-junkie himself, had just returned from living in Japan and was more thanebi nigiri sushi happy to show me his new found sushi making skills.

I pored over his collection of sushi recipes and started with the simple ones. At first, I made a lot of mistakes.

I tried stuffing too much sushi rice into my nori. My first roll resembled a giant lumpy sock stuffed with marbles.

Another time, I tossed expensive packets of yellow pickled daikon into the trash can, thinking they had spoiled. My friend kindly informed me they were supposed to smell like dirty feet.

With patience and lots of practice my efforts paid off . I’m still enjoying my own home made sushi. And you can too!
