How to make an inside-out sushi roll

In this video I'll show you how to make an inside-out sushi roll. In Japanese it is called Yukiwa-Maki.

In this demonstration I use the following ingredients:

  • 1 1/4 cups of cooked sushi rice
  • 1 sheet of toasted nori seaweed
  • 2 strips of immitation crab legs
  • 3 slices of avacodo
  • 2 strips of egg omlette

Use your imagination and choose any ingredients that tickle your fancy.

Method

  1. Wrap a sushi mat in plastic cling wrap. This will prevent the rice from your sushi roll sticking to the mat.
  2. Lay a sheet of nori on the mat with the shiny side facing down.
  3. Moisten your hands and scoop about half of the sushi rice onto the nori.
  4. Slowly spread the rice across the nori until the entire sheet is covered.
  5. Starting with the side closest to you, place a strip of crab leg on the nori. Follow this with 3 slices of avacodo and two strips of egg omlette.
  6. Add another crab stick.

How to Roll

  1. Lift the sushi mat by placing your thumbs underneath the mat.
  2. Grasp the ingredients with your remaing fingers to keep everything in its place.
  3. Bring the mat forward until it touches the edge of the ingredients.
  4. Gently squeeze and form the roll using both hands.
  5. Slowly unroll the mat and as you do this bring the roll back to the edge of the mat.
  6. Repeat these steps until all of the nori disappears.

Let your roll rest for about a minute.

Moisten a very sharp knife and cut the inside-out roll into two even halves.

Places the halves side-by-side and cut again. You will end up with four pieces.

Serve on an attractive plate with a bit of pickled ginger and wasabi.
