What is sushi? Do you really know the answer?
What sushi lover hasn't heard this famous refrain from friends and family:
"Sushi! Yuck! Raw fish!"
My usual cocky reply was: "Duh! Ya! Raw fish."
But, like my friends I had it all wrong.
What is sushi
The word sushi actually means vinegared rice. A simple plate of sliced, raw fish is called sashimi. The vinegar solution used to season sushi rice is called sushi-zu
Is that sushi or zushi This is kind of confusing, but sometimes sushi is spelled and prounced "zushi". For example, "box sushi" in Japanese is written as "hako-zushi".
